Hawaii
On December 2015, we had an amazing trip in Hawaii. We have spent 10 days on the West Coast, then 10 other days on the North Shore.
Our two boys came along, Lockie 5y. old and Elliot who had just turned 1y. old. We got very lucky to hire a great babysitter who lives in Makaha, where we stayed. The kids enjoyed playing under the trees and making friends on the beach, while we were tandem surfing the iconic wave. We met our tandem surfing friends from Hawaii, but we had the opportunity to catch up with Californian and French couples too.
The island of Oahu has many different faces, and when we moved to the North Shore it was an other world: packed with pro surfers and tourists from everywhere, all the eyes focused on the big surf. Fred had a blast surfing all the waves he has always dreamed of: Pipeline, Sunset, Backyards, V-Land... He used the finless wooden Alaia, the 6'0 Al Merrick (until I snapped it) and a 7'4". I was quite nervous about surfing on THE North Shore and I gave it a first go on my little boy's soft top board, my "fun machine", on an easy spot called "Freddies". Catching waves way too big for a foamy, I got confident enough to have a surf on a more challenging break, on my favorite gunny 6'3" (I snapped this one too, bouh).
Down to the East Coast, we have spent a day with Leleo Kinimaka, wood worker artist, who made a beautiful replica of the Duke's board called a Kikoo, out of 5 different local trees. The kids loved watching the process and Lockie helped Leleo to sand a little wooden sculped fishing hook. The master gave him the precious piece, making this experience feeling even more special.
The tour wouldn't be complete without a day trip in busy Waikiki Beach. Elliot had his first surf ever, tandeming with daddy. We later met with Leleo who delivered the heavy Kikoo all tinted and ready for a ride with its owner Fred.
